BABEL 17 was founded late 1988 by Jean Franceschi, Vincent Porte and Vincent Perret.
The band's music was influenced by Cold-Wave, Post-Punk, 80's pre-Goth scene, Industrial music... but also by New-Wave, Psychedelic rock, Dub, EBM, 80's & 90's Minimal Techno...
The band is quickly signed on Lively Art (New Wave/Coldwave/Electro subdivision of New Rose, the biggest french indie label at the time), publishes two albums, "Celeano Fragments" (1990), "Shades" (1991) and appears on several compilations. BABEL 17 was part of the Touching Pop movement, along with bands like Little Nemo, Asylum Party, Mary Goes Round, Neutral Project... In 1992, the band records a third album, "Shamanic Tales",
but Lively Art goes to bankruptcy before publishing it. This album was never released and fell into oblivion. The group disband a short time later.
BABEL 17 is nowadays considered like a mythical and strange 80's / 90's musical project.
By 2003, the band reforms several times with the original line-up before splitting up again in 2006. Jean Franceschi is then the only permanent member, and writes a new album, "The Ice Wall", helped by Franck Meissonnier (B17's ex-member 1992-1993). The album is published in 2009 by Infrastition, label who previously re-issued "Celeano Fragments" and "Shades".
In 2010, Vincent K, No Tears's former bassist joins the band. The new line-up works on the fourth BABEL 17's studio album "Leviathan", released in april 2013 by Infrastition.
The fifth B17's album "Process" is released by Infrastition in june 2017.

The song "Etsaw Didros" is the last song of the album "Process". "Etsaw Didros" is a special version of "Sordid Waste", excerpt from BABEL 17's 1st album and originally composed by Vincent Perret & Jean Franceschi. "Sordid Waste" was recorded in reverse with many effects and the cutting of the main voice, giving the song an ethereal ambiance, a second life, and a new title. It sounds like modern era Ambient Industrial Music.
